Accidents cost the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team valuable points

Grégoire Munster and Elias Lundberg are not going anywhere at the rally Liepāja in Latvia. Both Opel Juniors are unable to realise their potential after driving mistakes.

The ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team was disappointed at the third round of the European Junior Rally Championship (FIA ERC3 Junior Championship). The Opel juniors Grégoire Munster (20, Luxembourg) and Elias Lundberg (21, Sweden) missed the points at the gravel spectacle around the Latvian port city Liepāja due to accidents and thus lost ground in the overall standings.

Especially the gravel lover Elias Lundberg travelled confidently to the Baltic States. But after an encouraging training a rollover already destroyed all hopes of the young Swede in the first special stage. Although the mechanics of the ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team managed to repair the severely damaged ADAM R2 before the start of the second leg, a good result was illusory in view of 35 minutes behind (seven for each stage not completed).

On the second day the champion of the ADAC Opel Rally Cup 2018 with repaired car then demonstrated with good times what would have been possible with a "normal" rally course. "Of course I'm very annoyed about the mishap already in SS1," confessed Lundberg. "Many thanks to my hard-working mechanics who made our restart possible in a night shift. After all, on Sunday afternoon we were able to show that we could have kept up with the pace." The eleventh place did not reflect this circumstance at all.

Their teammates Grégoire Munster and Louis Louka, both of whom also competed for the first time at the Liepāja rally, finished the first day in eighth place. While trying to work his way forward the following day, Munster slightly touched a wooden post in SS8, whereupon the right drive shaft broke a few metres later. "A pity", regretted the son of the Belgian rally legend Bernard Munster. "Our goal was to reach the goal and gain as much gravel experience as possible. Unfortunately, we didn't manage that or only partially. It's positive that we had a lot of fun on these super-fast gravel tracks and were able to significantly increase our pace in the course of the rally".

Opel Motorsport Director Jörg Schrott defended his juniors: "We know from recent years that the smallest mistake can have drastic effects during this rally. And our boys now also know it. Something like that is also part of the learning and maturation process. Those who draw the right conclusions from such incidents and then implement them in the cockpit have the chance to come back even stronger. And that's exactly what we intend to do in Poland."

The fourth round of the FIA ERC3 Junior Championship will take place from 28 to 30 June as part of the Rally Poland around Mikolajki in Masuren, again on gravel.

Stand FIA ERC3 Junior after 3 of 6 runs:

1st Llarena 83 points. 2. Furuseth 64. 3. Francheschi 57. 4. Antunes 57. 5. Ken 39. 6. Rokland 32. 7. Lundberg 26. 8. Munster 23. 9. Wagner 18. 10. Cais 17.
