  • Latvian Mārtiņš Sesks wins the Barum Czech Rally Zlín in Opel ADAM R2
  • Sesks extends its lead in the Junior Rally European Championship with its second victory of the season
  • Tom Kristensson advances to second place overall in Czech asphalt hunt

Rüsselsheim/Munich/Zlín. The ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team has taken an important step in the fight for the fourth consecutive title win in the European Junior Rally Championship (FIA ERC Junior U27). Four weeks after his first victory in Rome the only 18-year-old Latvian Mārtiņš Sesks in the Opel ADAM R2 also won the class classification of the Barum Czech Rally Zlín in the Czech Republic and thus has a 59-point lead over his nearest rival in the overall standings. After four of six rounds of the season, he is now called Tom Kristensson. The 27-year-old Swede celebrated his second consecutive podium position at the asphalt hunt in the east of the Czech Republic with third place, thus completing Opel's double lead in the FIA ERC Junior U27 as well as the ERC3 classification. The ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team also leads the team classification in a commanding manner.

In adverse external conditions with changing heavy rain and extremely treacherous tarmac tracks both Opel juniors kept their nerves. Right from the start Sesks and Kristensson fought a tough battle with the strong Peugeot driver Simon Wagner from Austria. After winning the first stage classification on Saturday evening, Sesks did not drive with maximum risk on the final day and finally finished 17.3 seconds ahead of Wagner. "I'm overjoyed," beamed the leader of the standings from the Baltic States, who once again relied on the announcements of his co-driver Renārs Francis. "The ultimate goal was to get our ADAM R2 to the finish in one piece. I still have a lot to learn and I've never driven on such an underground like this before. The danger of a slip was omnipresent".

All the higher was the second podium place in a row for Tom Kristensson and Henrik Appelskog in the second Opel ADAM R2 of the ADAC Opel Rallye Team. "We are very satisfied," Kristensson said happily. "The conditions were extremely treacherous. Nevertheless, we found a good rhythm right from the start and were able to set two special stage best times straight away. As a result we mainly tried to secure the podium position and keep our ADAM R2 on the track. By no means did everyone succeed in that."

Indeed, the failure rate at the Barum Czech Rally Zlín was enormous. Exactly 40 of the 124 started rally vehicles did not make it to the finish ramp in Zlín.

With his second victory of the season, Sesks clearly extended his lead in the intermediate classification in the FIA ERC Junior U27 as well as the FIA ERC3 to team mate Kristensson. "But at the moment nobody in the team is thinking about a possible title win," Opel Motorsport Director Jörg Schrott stresses. "The two outstanding gravel events in Poland and Latvia will again be an extremely difficult task. We want to master them as well as possible and only then look at the score. First of all, I'm very satisfied with the performance of my drivers here in the Czech Republic. In extremely difficult external conditions they perfectly implemented our requirements and showed a strong pace without taking too high a risk."

The fifth and penultimate season event of the FIA ERC Junior U27 will take place from 21 to 23 September within the framework of the Rally Poland around Mikolajki in Masuren.
