Great ambition in ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

The rally Liepāja in Latvia is the half time of the season in the European Junior Rally Championship. The Opel juniors Elias Lundberg and Grégoire Munster want to give a good performance in their ADAM R2 on the Latvian gravel as well.

The ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team associates the rally Liepāja with extremely positive memories. Four times in a row pilots of an Opel ADAM R2 won the Junior European Championship at the gravel spectacle around the port city of the same name. After Liepāja had been the venue of the season opener until 2016 and since then of the season finale, the Latvian guest appearance this year marks the season half time in the FIA ERC3 Junior Championship. And the Opel factory drivers Elias Lundberg (21, Sweden) and Grégoire Munster (20, Luxembourg) are burning with ambition to achieve a top result on the super-fast gravel tracks against the fierce competition.

Lundberg in particular is considered a lover of the loose ground, on which the Scandinavian almost naturally has much more experience than his team mate from the Benelux. Already at this year's season start on the Azores Lundberg proved with rank 3 that he feels comfortable on gravel. However, the track characteristics on the Azores can hardly be compared to those in Latvia - narrow and slow on the Portuguese archipelago, wide and fluid in the Baltic States.

In the third of six rounds of the FIA ERC3 Junior Championship, the overall standings are becoming more and more important. Even though only four of the six individual results are included in the year-end ranking, those who speculate on the European Championship crown at the end of the race cannot afford to slip up. In the intermediate table, the Opel Juniors in positions 5 (Lundberg) and 6 (Munster) are absolutely within striking distance of each other, with both already having a strike result on their accounts.

Elias Lundberg and his co-driver David Arhusiander are looking forward to the rally Liepāja. "After the problematic rally on Gran Canaria we are now hot on the Latvian gravel. The ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team brings a lot of will to win and know-how to support us on our way to a top result, and the ADAM R2 has won four times in Latvia. So it's up to us in the cockpit to make the most of these good conditions. However, the competition in this year's JERC is really enormous, and some of our rivals are already in Liepāja, so we need a perfect performance to be able to fight for the podium like in the Azores".

Their team-mates Grégoire Munster and Louis Louka got themselves in the right mood for the third round of the Junior European Championship with a class victory at the Sezoensrally - also on gravel - which is part of the Belgian Rally Championship. Nevertheless, the young Luxembourger keeps the ball flat: "Even the good result in Belgium shouldn't hide the fact that we're still lacking gravel experience. But Louis and I will do everything we can to achieve a good result like on Gran Canaria. Winning self-confidence in the cockpit and increasing our speed step by step will be the main goal in Latvia. I am sure that with the support of the great guys from the ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team we will be able to further reduce the gap to the absolute top in the extremely strong ERC3 Junior".

The competition is once again impressive: a total of 22 R2 cars are entered in the RC4 category, of which 19 in the ERC3 and 16 in the ERC3 Junior are entered for drivers up to 27 years of age. The rally Liepāja covers a total distance of 851.57 kilometres, including 13 special stages over 206.63 kilometres. It starts on Friday evening with the official show start at Liepāja, before the rally starts the next morning at 11.40 a.m. local time (CEST plus one hour). The first leg includes five special stages over 100.05 kilometres, the decision about the rally victory will be made on Sunday at 8.40 a.m. Eight special stages and 106.58 kilometres later the finish ramp crossing in Liepāja ends the event at 19.05 hrs.
